Too Much: Not a Big Deal
Kava

DOSE:
6 - 21 g buccal Kava (roots)
BODY WEIGHT: 132 lb
Too Much Kava: Not a Big Deal

I received kava dried roots from Vanuatu 3 days ago, ordered on a good reputation Hawaiian web store. The root chunks are 3-4 cm long, 0.5-1.5 cm diameter, mean weight around 1.5g. It is noble kava lateral roots only.

After 2 evenings taking disappointing effectless doses (4 to 5 chunks = ~6g to 7,5g), and as I was yesterday in an insomnia night (I'm used to often have sleep disorders), I decided to try kava as a sleep aid, raising the dose (a little bit too much I guess). So here is my trip report.

Before going to sleep (11:00 PM) I had 4 chunks (~6g). I did not prepare a drink, instead I chewed thoroughly root chunks, I like the taste and intense mouth numbing it gives. Except the numbing effects, nothing noticeable happened, like previous times.
I then went to bed.

After one hour (00:00 AM) I was still not able to sleep, so I got up and went to the sitting room. I didn't turn on the light, being just lighted by the town's public lighting. I began taking root chunks, chewed like previously, keeping most of saliva/resin mix in my mouth as long as I could and chewing it to liquefy as much as possible. As a newbie (and I am one), I wanted to feel the effect before stopping the intake. So I took 14 chunks, it took me nearly 1 hour to do so. I then felt a very light grogginess, and I stated it should be enough, so I stopped. I thought that I was not responding to kava, as it was a very light effect.

The rise of the effects went very quietly while I was on the Internet, waiting for sleep to come. One hour after I stopped intake (01:00 AM) I felt like if I were somehow drunk. Two hours after I stopped the intake (02:00 AM), and after lots of commenting and publishing on social media, I realized that I was to-tal-ly stoned. My mind was (relatively) clear, but my body was severely impaired, as if I took far too much alcohol.

I was very relaxed. Some nausea too. I went to bed, and had no problem to find sleep, at last :)

09:00 AM: Time to get up. I had a good night. But still strong residual effects. Quite strong nausea, I nearly puked after my breakfast. A remaining kind of drunkenness and urge to go back to bed. Not a big trouble as I have nothing planned today and I have not to go to work. But contrariwise it would have been a serious issue.

10:30 AM: At the time I finish writing this report, the effects have somehow diminished, no more nausea, just a physical stone and fatigue like a binge drinking morning after, but without headache and other bad aspects. And still fully relaxed :) I think I'm gonna sleep a few hours more.

Conclusion: The kava power is not to be underestimated. Next time I'll stick to a more reasonable dose (I've often read 15g is a good dose). The overdose I took is not a big deal, but it is thanks to the fact I have nothing to do today.

I would wait 1 hour or more between intakes of kava, especially if I take it on a not empty belly, as the effects rise can be slow.
