I have noticed a remarkable lack of effect-specific reports on methylphenidate. Over a year of taking this drug, I believe myself to be in a good position to offer such a report.
I am a 21-year-old American of Asian descent (drugs affect members of different races in different ways) and have been insufflating Ritalin IR (10mg methylphenidate hydrochloride) occasionally for the past year. The following will be a description of the effects of my average day of Ritalin intake.
8am- stomach empty after 7 hours of sleep. Mind foggy and blur due to having just woken up.
2x 10mg Ritalin; crushed into a fine powder, then snorted. Then I sit back and await effects.
8.10am- Ritalin noticeable. Brain fog and overall blurriness evaporates, to be replaced by noticeable enhancement of cognitive faculties. Can best be described in anecdotal fashion as 'a sharpening of previously dull cognitive functions'.
A subtle motivation to perform mental (not physical) tasks appears. This is felt in a subtle way. Examples include feeling a mild urge to read the newspaper; research various subjects on the Internet; and leave the house to accomplish tasks. Contrasted to feelings on any other 8.05am morning w/o MPH: feelings of laziness; an overall aversion to leave the house to do anything at all; an overall disposition towards being lazy and do nothing.
A soft, warm, feeling of pleasantness is felt in the brain. This does NOT extend to the body - only the brain. Can be described anecdotally as 'a feeling of warm contentment - pleasantly satisfied to be sitting in one place, and silently contemplate the thoughts that MPH-induced creativity and MPH-induced focus brings about'. Contrast this usual feelings of 'having to always be in physical motion; not being able to sit still and quietly for periods longer than a few minutes before wanting to move around'.
AFOREMENTIONED EFFECTS PERSIST CONSISTENTLY UNTIL NEXT DOSAGE
9am- Enjoying effects of Ritalin. Insufflate an additional 20mg of MPH.
9.05am- additional dose manifests itself. Effects described below
Most noticeable effect is an intense focus of mental faculties. I'm normally lacking in self-control and focus. I experience, due to additional dose of MPH, a newfound ability to focus energy on whatever task I choose to perform. Unique form of motivation in that it affects only mental tasks - while physical endurance is not enhanced, MPH provides me with additional mental willpower to persist in the face of physical fatigue, e.g. if I were to go for 5mile run, I would feel physical fatigue and urge to discontinue physical activity in equal amounts as to my regular state - MPH, however, gives me the mental willpower to make myself keep going.
Pleasant, warm, feeling of contentment is moderately intensified. After initial dose, I felt mildly happy and content. After 2nd dose, I feel VERY content in a focused fashion - MPH causes me to sit still and feel very content with contemplating thoughts or focusing on work. Contrast this to my regular state of feeling restless after sitting for 5 minutes; and my regular state of being hyperactive and noisy - always having to talk to someone or do something 'fun'.
ADDITIONAL, LAST, DOSE OF 20MG INSUFFLATED AFTER ANOTHER 60 MINUTES
10am- effects persist and have been consistent. I insufflate 20mg of MPH.
Sole observed effect is a boost in mental energy. This is manifested as a newfound capacity for intellectual and/or creative endeavour. Contrast this to normal feelings of reluctance towards anything requiring significant mental exertion, e.g. I normally am strongly against doing schoolwork and feel lazy after a short while of doing said schoolwork. MPH causes me to not only actively WANT to do this schoolwork; I am also HAPPY to do so; and feel mentally energetic even after prolonged periods of doing schoolwork.
NO FURTHER DOSES TAKEN.
Effects persist consistently at the state they were felt after the 3rd dose for SIX hours.
Effects persist consistently at the state they were felt after the 3rd dose for SIX hours.
4pm- I feel sense of warm pleasantness going down in level of intensity. I experience a reduction in MPH-induced focus and levels of MPH-induced mental energy.
6pm- sense of warm pleasantness disappeared entirely. I feel somewhat more focused and mentally energetic as compared to baseline levels, but levels of this are far lower than at 9am state. I experience first feelings of mental fatigue.
7pm- all MPH-induced effects on user are gone. Comedown effects (effects caused by earlier intake of MPH and not otherwise felt at a comparable time w/o earlier MPH intake) are felt. I feel moderately fatigued, mentally. I feel a sense of tiredness physically, also, despite having performed no strenuous physical activity throughout the day. I feel a strong urge to 'lie down' and 'do nothing at all with either the mind or the body'.
8pm- Sole effect from comedown caused by earlier intake of MPH is a pronounced laziness both in physical and mental aspects. This is manifested as lying down on bed, feeling physically tired, with empty mind (thoughts not extending beyond basic wants of food/drink/etc). Contrasted to my usual state at a comparable time of day w/o MPH intake, of moderate levels of physical energy, and thoughts that extend beyond basic necessities.
8pm to 5am (the following day)- I'm unable to sleep. Note that I do not feel restless - I am able to lie down; just unable to sleep. I experience low energy levels consistent with those at 8pm.
NOTE: I feel NO mental or physical discomfort throughout comedown. Low levels of energy are not unpleasant; and I feel okay lying on bed with an empty mind throughout the comedown. There are NO feelings of unpleasant restlessness.
4am (approximately, give or take 15 minutes)- I fall asleep.
8am- I awake, and feel no effects (positive, negative, or neutral) whatsoever from previous day's MPH. It is of note that I do not feel unusually fatigued despite lack of sufficient sleep.
CONCLUSION AND OVERALL DESCRIPTION OF USER PROFILE
I'm a 21-year-old American of Asian (Korean) descent, born and raised in California, the US of America. User is male. I stand at exactly 6ft, and weigh 180lbs. I have a clinically measured body-fat level of 6%.
My normal state is described by multiple friends from various social circles as 'extremely crazy and random'; 'always spouting jokes and nonsense'; 'having no self-control at all'; and 'always the life of the party but not someone to have at a study group'. I describe myself as generally happy, with above-average levels of energy, manifested as constant moving about; incessant talking and joking; and being constantly hyperactive. My teachers unanimously describe me as 'highly disruptive in classes; fun yet exasperating as a student due to never-ending yelling-out of jokes and inappropiate comments during class-time'. I also lack self-control and find myself unable to perform tasks requiring self-regulation, eg tasks I find unpleasant such as schoolwork.
I have been diagnosed with clinical ADHD since the age of 18, with a primary focus on hyperactivity. I take marijuana occasionally, and party drugs such as MDMA and cocaine even more occasionally. It is worthy of note that I have NEVER combined any other drugs with MPH - I have thus always experienced MPH-induced effects untainted by the presence of any other pharmaceutical.
I take MPH twice-weekly, on average, always insufflating three 20mg doses with 60 minutes between doses.
I find MPH good in that it allows me to focus my abundant amounts of energy, for prolonged time periods, onto tasks that I would otherwise be unable to do. I enjoy the slight euphoria MPH always creates. I discourage others from using MPH for 'fun' purposes, as I believe it does not serve this purpose well. I have attended parties while experiencing the peak of MPH's effects, and on every such occasion found myself the only serious guy amongst a bunch of drunk people. I much prefer my usual state of craziness while in such situations.
IN A WORD,
MPH is good if I am looking for a drug that will provide me with the ability to focus. It enhances and sharpens mental faculties, and gives me higher-than-normal levels of mental energy.
It creates a 'clean' euphoria that is unlike the 'crazy' euphoria of cocaine. MPH's euphoria feels warmer, more subtle, and causes me to feel more content than crazily-happy, as cocaine does.
I have NOT experienced ANY noticeably bad comedown effects from MPH. I have experienced NO addiction at al - I have gone for weeks w/o even thinking of MPH.
I once took 80mg of MPH, insufflated, at one go. Effects were rather unpleasant - these included overwhelming nausea that crippled me beyond anything more than a few yards, and strong heart palpitations. No other effects were observed, and nausea disappeared within two hours.
