I've been wanting to experiment with galangal for some time but I lived in a remote area not close to any asian grocery stores, at least ones that carried galangal. Currently I'm living in South Florida, and there are plenty of specialty markets to be found. While riding my bike today I stopped at small plaza to take a break from peddling in the hot Florida sun. I looked up and saw the sign for an Asian market. I thought what the hell? And decided to see what they had to offer. I asked the clerk if they carried 'Thai ginger.' He frowned and I thought oh well, but then he summoned another clerk who actually spoke English. I repeated my request, he said he didn't know, but then I dropped the word 'galangal' and he then led me to a cooler. He whipped out an 8 oz bag of frozen galangal whole pieces. 8 ounces cost all of 1.99$. This was the start of a great afternoon.
I left and went to the beach. I let the galangal thaw out a bit then pulled out 4 pieces. I started to chew it up a piece at a time. I love galangal in Thai cooking but this was an interesting epicurean experience in its own. The spicyness was not overpowering at all, but chasing it down with soda was downright painful. I think the carbonation really made it bad, imagine chewing on ground up glass. Luckily I had water on hand, which worked fine and caused no pain. After a lot of chewing of what tasted like a Christmas tree branch, I got down the 4 pieces.
Not even 15 minutes after swallowing the last piece I began to feel the effects. Color was intensified and relaxation came easy. I became very introspective and content with things. Music sounded very crisp and clear. I really started to get into the music and as I walked down the shoreline memories of good times with friends back home flooded my mind. At this point I felt overcome with gratitude and joy, yet at the same time I became homesick. Overall this was much like a mild dose of acid with a comparable body high. Just fantastic but not overbearing. It was also somewhat similar to a moderately higher dose of gabapentin in some ways. Calm, happy, content, but still something to it that counts as psychedelic. I loved it and can't wait to take even more next time.
