Is the nystagmus caused by LSD and PCP temporary or permanent?

On your LSD 'bits and pieces' page, you mention that LSD causes "horizontal nystagmus" and that PCP causes "horizontal and vertical nystagmus". Do these occur while the person is under the influence of the drug (i.e. temporary), after repeated use of the drug potentialy indicating vestibular system disease (a disease relating to disorientation), or both? |

The nystagmus we mention for LSD and PCP are temporary effects which last for only a short time after ingestion (generally during the primary effects of the substance). There is no evidence in the medical literature to suggest there is any long term nystagmus caused by LSD. I'm not as familiar with the medical literature on PCP, so I don't know definitively that the same is true for PCP, but I have never heard anything to suggest that they nystagmus caused by PCP is permanent, even in cases of repeated and heavy use.
