Abstract
Illegal use of the mood-altering drug methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), commonly known as 'ecstasy' or 'E', is now firmly established in Europe and the U.S.A. MDMA abuse is of concern, particularly because animal studies have indicated that MDMA can induce long-term neuronal damage. In this article I review some of the complex biochemical actions of MDMA and discuss how these may relate to the psychopharmacological and neurotoxic effects of this drug.
