Bio-Chemical Journal. 1910;p193-206.
Abstract
Reports subjective effects in a human from smoking dried Duboisia hopwoodii, reports action of an isolated alkaloid on frogs, rabbits, dogs, and cats; pharmacology is suggestive of nicotine. Discusses previous work that called the identity of nicotine from D. hopwoodii into question. Presents chemical analysis confirming the presence of nicotine based on pharmacology, volatility, a positive iodo-nicotine test, solubility in water and process of an opalescent warm solution clearing upon cooling, and its unwillingness to yield crystalline salts.
