Abstract
Describes the emergence and popularization in this decade of the psychoactive drug 3,4-methylenedioxymethamphetamine (MDMA), which is related to both amphetamines and mescaline. It is noted that nonmedical use of MDMA is on the increase. The listing of MDMA as a Schedule 1 controlled substance is discussed as well as the derivation of the drug, the sociology of its use, and its risks and psychotherapeutic benefits. Noted adverse effects include a prolonged and uncomfortable 'burnout' period after use, susceptibility to sore throats, flu, colds, and herpes outbreaks, and occasional psychological problems (i.e., anxiety or panic attacks). It is concluded that the scheduling of MDMA will have a greater impact on therapy and research than on recreational use. ((c) 1999 APA/PsycINFO, all rights reserved)
