Abstract
A general survey of the facts known today about the pathophysiology of the monoamines. . LSD is discussed from various points of view, especially its antagonism to serotonin (5-HT) and 5- hydroxytryptophan, its various effects on evoked potentials (EEG), and with regard to the effects of chlorpromazine and reserpine in animal experiments. The influence of LSD on the performance of conditioned reflexes is also desribed. . The effects of BOL are briefly described, mainly with regard to whether the absence of psychotomimetic effects contradicts the hypothesis that the psychotomimetic effects of LSD are due to 5-HT antagonism. The author considers the possibility that the differences in the central effects of LSD and BOL may be caused by the 5-HT receptors, which may be blocked by LSD but not by BOL.
