“The possible role of a LSD-protein complex in LSD model psychosis.”.
Neuro-Psychopharmacology. 1959;p338.
Abstract
Block et al found that one part of radioactive mescaline injected in mice was incorporated in the liver protein. In their opinion the autonomic initial phase is caused by free mescaline, the second phase, the psychic, by the mescaline-protein which imigrates from the liver into the brain. . Keup reports of analogue investigations with LSD in rats, which received C14 labelled LSD i.p. and were sacrificed after different intervals (5 minutes to 24 hours after the injection). . In the various organs the maximum of radioactivity (70 imp/min/mg) was found 1 to 2 hours after the injection. Only in muscle did the activity reach a peak (287 imp/min/mg) as early as after 5 minutes and then decreased rapidly. . The radioactivity which could not be washed out of the protein precipitates of the organs was much lower (1-8.5 imp/min/mg) and reached the maximum at the earliest after 6 hours. The fastest increase was observed in the liver (almost maximum fist peak after about 2 hours). The percentage values of the protein- bound on the total activity increased continuously in all organs up to 24 hours and almost without exception before 6 hours were highest of all organs in the liver and after 6 hours in the brain. . The initial phase of LSD intoxication coincided approximately with the peak of the total activity; thus it depended on the free LDS. The second, the psychic phase coincided with the peak of the protein-bound LSD in the brain. . The present study agrees with but does not prove Block's theory. Further tests are contemplated.
