“A concept for a role of serotonin and norepinephrine as chemical mediators in the brain.”.
Ann. N.Y. Acad. Sc.. 1957;66:631.
Abstract
It is possible that serotonin is a synaptic transmitting agent acting on hypothalamic and other subcortical centres. . Reserpine and chlorpromazine produce similar central effects by different mechanisms, the drugs acting on physiologically antagonistic systems in the brainstem. Reserpine releases serotonin and thus activates the "serotoninergic" system. Chlorpromazine blocks norepinephrine and therefore the "adrenergic" system. LSD blocks "serotoninergic" fibres, thus unmasking the action of the opposing system and producing sympathicotonia-like effects.
