Italy regulates controlled substances under national law DPR 309. With the enactment of this controversial law in 1990, drug use became criminalized for the first time in modern Italy's history. The law was relaxed in 1993, then made more restrictive in February, 2006. Possession and traffic of controlled substances are illegal in Italy.
