Carisoprodol (Soma) is unscheduled in the United States, but is available by prescription only. This means that sales and distribution are allowed only by those with a license and only to those with a prescription (according to FDA regulations). Possession is not illegal without a prescription.
Although the DEA has been tracking carisoprodol for many years, in August 2006, the DEA issued a document describing carisoprodol formally as a "Drug of Concern". See http://www.deadiversion.usdoj.gov/drugs_concern/carisoprodol.htm. A U.S. Federal ban on carisoprodol is expected within a few years, but the drug has been around for a long time.

"Carisoprodol is available by prescription only in Finland in a product called 'Somadril comp'. It contains 200 mg carisoprodol, 160 mg paracetamol [acetminophen] and 32 mg caffeine." (unconfirmed) (thanks E)

Available without prescription in Mexico, but in doses smaller than those sold in the US. Advertisements for 'soma' availability common in border city Tijuana.
Spain #

We have been told that carisoprodol is a class 4 drug in Sweden. (thanks J)
Thailand #
In 2005 an Erowid reader told us that carisoprodol is available over-the-counter in Thailand, in a 125 mg carisprodol/125 mg phenylbutazone formulation or mixed with Tylenol. It was reported to be inexpensive. (unconfirmed) (thanks S)
