This took place on the first day of my Senior year (highschool). Basically I am a complete noob to drugs. At this point all I had ever done was weed every once in a while, some benadryl, and some vicodin from a wisdom teeth surgery. Over the course of the quarantine, I had developed (as I often do during breaks for better or worse), a habit of going to sleep what I considered very late. Most of the time I would sleep from 5-8 am until about 3 or 4 pm. Well, I had to wake up somehow, since I knew an all-nighter would kill me. I took melatonin as usual when I have trouble sleeping and for some reason I got anxious waiting for it to put me to sleep. Concluding from this, I took one ambien before bed at my dad’s suggestion hoping it would knock me out faster, and laid down at 11:30pm.

For about 20-30 minutes, nothing really happened. I thought about my upcoming morning and all the time I spent away from school. This was in 2020, so of course we were on a distance learning schedule the next day. Soon, a vague fuzzy warmish feeling took effect and I felt sunk and slightly immovable in my bed, and for a solid hour, my green-lit digital clock’s numbers morphed together in the darkness. The clock’s green numbers kept shaping into figures, one I particularly remember was a face resembling one of the default profile pictures from the Xbox 360. It looked like the one with a target on the side of its head and a large toothy grin. Sort of looked like Thanos. When I would look away from the clock, which was kind of like my “safe space”, I saw or felt the presence of a rushing.. road? It looked like I was swooping over Rainbow Road from Mario Kart, with sort of gently flashing lights going on around it. It was then, after all of that, that I realized I was high off the ambien.

My idea that I was having a lucid nightmare shifted towards a more relaxed acceptance. I stayed in bed and sort of enjoyed the show as it were, though it did not feel particularly positive or negative. Finally, at around 1:30 am, I fell asleep. I woke up the next morning at a decent time before school. I woke up groggy and with a slight headache, with heavy eyelids and a tiny bit of pressure behind them. I woke up remembering the trip the little ambien had made me undergo, and I wondered if it was similar to hallucinogens.
