Anonymous donations through a new digital currency
Erowid accepts donations (but not membership dues) through Bitcoin.
Erowid is testing out accepting donations through Bitcoin, an ultra-geeky anonymous digital currency. Thanks to everyone who has seen this page and contributed so far. This is much, much more successful than our last few attempts to use new micropayment systems (such as Bitpass or Flattr)! We try to experiment with new payment methods as they come and go, but most end up being a waste of everyone's time and money. If you would like to help support both Erowid and Bitcoin, send us a few! We'll keep you updated about how it goes.
Since the price of BTC went from under one USD per to up over $15 USD per BTC, we haven't gotten that many BTC donations.
Here is a practical list of steps necessary to send us Bitcoins. Note that you could also just donate via Dwolla, which has very low fees currently, though it is not very anonymous:

- Download the Bitcoin client: Bitcoin.org.
- Sign up for Dwolla.
- Make an ACH withdrawal from your bank account into Dwolla.
- Transfer money from Dwolla to Mt. Gox.
- Buy Bitcoins at Mt. Gox
- Send Erowid Center a few Bitcoins by entering our address (1KP9MwnpCtp7Si2WgL29EVR27Gi6HXbrAz) into your Bitcoin client.
- Feel extremely cutting edge, anonymous, and hacker-y. You are now cool.
- If you don't need to be quite as anonymous, send us an email letting us know you donated Bitcoins, since otherwise we receive no notification.
- ...
- Profit.
Bitcoin Experience Log
- June 10, 2011: Success : Converted 50 BTC at $28.70 per, for $1430 USD.
- May 13, 2011: Success: Converted 100 BTC into $800 USD.
- Apr 13, 2011: Success : Converted 50 BTC into $44.13 USD
We successfully converted 50 BTC into USD using CoinCard into PayPal! A total of $44.13 was received, which works out to a rate of $0.8826 per Bitcoin, including transaction fees. This transaction took about an hour to go through. - Apr 13, 2011: Success: Converted 96.99 BTC into $86.38 USD
Using http://coincard.ndrix.com, this transaction took less than 30 minutes to complete.
