GBL (Gamma-Butyrolactone) is not directly controlled under United States Federal law. In a November 12, 2008, the DEA filed an entry in the Federal Register (DOCID:fr12no08-27) indicating that they are planning on exempting impure GBL (70% GBL and under) from the current restrictions the DEA places on GBL sales.

GBL (gamma butyrlactone) is a List I Chemical federally and is scheduled in some states (California, Hawaii, New York, Oklahoma, Oregon). For information about the legal status of GHB, see GHB Law and 1,4-butanediol, see the 1,4b Law Vault."

  • 2002 - The DEA engaged in a very active campaign to reduce GBL, GHB, and 1,4-butanediol sales over the internet, calling their project Operation Webslinger. In late 2002, the DEA arrested a large number of people for buying and selling GBL over the internet.
