| Alcohol distillation is documented by the medical school at Salerno, Italy. The product of the distillation is named 'spirits' in reference to it being the extracted spirit of the wine. |
| Until the 16th century, however, distilled or spiritous liquors continue to be made primarily from wine (producing things like brandy), are costly and are used only by the wealthy as a medicine. Credited with extraordinary healing powers, their common name is aqua vitae, "water of life." |
