Can lidocaine be made into cocaine?
Q: Hi I have some lidocaine hydrocloride oral topical solution, USP 2\% (viscous) and was wondering if you knew a way to turn it into cocaine or a cocaine-like substance. If it is possible at all.

A: Lidocaine is a synthetic local anesthetic. There are many similar drugs such as benzocaine (found in over the counter mouth sore or bug bite treatments) and procaine (better known as Novocaine). Some of these drugs have uses as heart medication as well as being local anesthetics. In spite of the similarity in names, these drugs are not very closely related chemically to cocaine. They aren't even all chemically related to each other. Procaine was the first one developed, and was given the brand name Novocaine - short for nova cocaine, or "new cocaine." It was developed as a replacement for cocaine but lacks cocaine's euphoric and addictive properties. There is no practical way to convert lidocaine or any of the other "cains" into cocaine, or to get high from them.
