There is a latin proverb: "Mens sana in corpore sano", which means a "healthy brain lives in a healthy body".
In this country the Big Pharma has all the business interests to sell you prescribed expensive drugs and has no intention for you to do well with over the counter medication. The doctors lie to people claiming that the nootropics are "nutritional suppliments or herbs" when in fact they are medications made with countless studies & research which is different than "nutritional suppliments" which don't have much studies but mostly folk traditions. This book will educate you on medication which can make you alert and keep your brain in good shape and if you don't eat junk food then you can enjoy a long and healthy life which doesn't fit the agenda of big pharma and the government which has to pay you social security longer than their estimated longevity. In Europe one can buy all these medications over the counter from any Pharmacies while in this country you have to buy them via mail order from all sorts of distribuitors and the prices are here at least 3 tiimes bigger than Europe.

This book is a good introductory to nootropics (smart drugs), however, I found it a bit dated (maybe there's an updated release??). Also, I've found just a much information freely on-line via nootropic forums.

Purchased this book in the 90’s. I had a terrible time retaining information...especially names. I studied the book and looked for the supplements and nootropics that had the best safety record and put together a program for myself. The results were more than stunning. I remember thinking that now I know how a normal brain should work.

I did not keep up with the program, but my brain never returned to ground zero. However, I recently went through a great deal of chemo and finally an immunotherapy. Initially I did quite well with the chemo with respect to brain function. I’m now noticing some slight change. Time to review this book and research further as well. I’m very grateful to the author.

I found the book to be well laid out and easy to access.

When the original Smart Drugs book came out, I started on Piracetam, Hydergine, and Lucidril. With absolutely remarkable results. I was no dullard beforehand, but after a few months on that combination, I was able to enhance my problem solving ability and overall intelligence considerably. Unfortunately I now have a fairly rare disease, Porphyria, so can now longer take most of the nootropics. And I can really tell the difference.

I also had some interaction with Dean, Fowkes, and Morganthaler back in that era and subscribed to the CERI newsletter. I can tell you from personal experience, they are terrific. They were so helpful and kind. The fact that Ward Dean is in prison in my mind says nothing about him being "dishonest' as a previous reviewer points out, but to the fact that our government picks certain individuals who have counter ideas to the establishment and choose to persecute them. Let's not be naive, folks.........

5.0 out of 5 stars Well written.

I like Dean's writing style because it's very thorough but also precise. You can tell this is an area he has dedicated a large part of his career to understanding; it shows through in the detail. Lots of testimonials and very clear instructions. It's an old book but it has aged well and gives extra value over and above the sometimes vague (repetitive and often directly copied) information you will find online about all the supplements Dean covers here.

If you're interested in smart drugs, this is a classic book that was WAY ahead of its time. Well worth picking up a second-hand copy.

3.0 out of 5 stars A bit outdated

Well written, but unfortunately rather outdated. For example, no info on popular nootropics like Armodafinil or Noopept
